Coaching for Change
-
Make clearer decisions and take purposeful action when the way forward is uncertain.
I offer structured, inquiry-led coaching for leaders and professionals navigating complexity, change, or an important next step. Together, we create space to think clearly, test assumptions, reconnect with what matters, and turn insight into practical action.
Coaching is tailored to your values, context, and the challenge you are working through. The aim is not to provide generic answers, but to strengthen your ability to make confident decisions, build adaptive habits, and move forward from where you are.
Coaching can support you to:
Set meaningful goals in uncertain or changing circumstances
Make decisions that are aligned with your values and responsibilities
Turn reflection into practical, purposeful action
Build habits that support more adaptive and strategic leadership
Work through a live leadership, career, or organisational challenge
Book a free 30-minute exploratory conversation
We can use this initial conversation to explore what you are working through and whether this approach is right for you.
Consulting & Advisory
-
Not every important organisational issue begins with a clear brief. Sometimes the most valuable work is defining the real problem, making the choices visible, and creating enough shared understanding for a team to move forward.
I work alongside senior leaders as a trusted advisor, bringing experience across strategy, organisational capability, complex change, and cross-sector delivery. We start with the challenge in front of you, then use structured inquiry, practical analysis, and collaborative problem-solving to develop decisions that are well informed and workable in practice.
Consulting and advisory can help you to:
Define and frame a complex organisational challenge
Map organisational maturity, capability, and readiness for change
Connect projects, programmes, and investment decisions to strategic outcomes
Identify where systems, decision-making, or ways of working are constraining progress
Sequence improvement work so that effort is focused where it will have the greatest impact
Develop clear, practical options for leaders to consider and act on

Short-courses & Masterclass
-
These short courses and masterclasses are for people responsible not only for developing strategy, but for turning it into decisions, ways of working, and action.
Rather than teaching strategy as a set of abstract tools, we work with a live challenge from your organisation. Together, we explore the link between your strategic direction, the systems that shape everyday work, and the capability needed to deliver and adapt over time.
Courses and masterclasses can help you to:
Clarify what matters most in a changing environment
See how everyday systems and ways of working enable or constrain strategy
Assess the maturity and capability needed to deliver strategic intent
Identify practical next steps for stronger strategic delivery
Build a shared language for strategy, systems, and organisational change

Delivering Change
-
Change rarely unfolds exactly as planned. Priorities shift, delivery conditions evolve, and organisations need to respond without losing sight of the outcomes they are trying to achieve.
I work alongside organisations to design and deliver change programmes that hold true to the intended direction while adapting to what is learned along the way. Drawing on experience in organisational transformation, programme delivery, and capability development, I help teams strengthen the systems, structures, and ways of working that make change sustainable.
Delivering change can help you to:
Develop strategies and change plans that adapt to shifting conditions
Improve focus, alignment, and shared understanding across projects and programmes
Connect change activity directly to strategic outcomes
Strengthen delivery capability, organisational maturity, and confidence
Design practical systems, structures, and ways of working that support implementation
Build learning and adaptation into the delivery of change
Accelerate the implementation of strategy without losing sight of what matters

How Joe Works
One on One
Coaching Leaders is about you, Joe will be alongside you to support in setting goals, bring your values into sharper focus and frame these goals and values into actionable decision making tools. The aim here is to support the journey you are on, providing confidence in decisions and a place and space to reflect on how you do your work.
Mentoring is about Joe sharing his experiences for you to learn from. This work is more targeted for people wanting to develop and implement strategy that will adapt to their organisations needs, analyse their operating context, diagnose where an organisation is on its maturity journey and of most importance - building trust in teams through uncertainty and change. Joe’s Mentoring is about becoming the kind of leader people want to follow when times get tough.
One to Many
Consulting and Advisory is about the organisational challenges you bring. What is the team working on? Joe can support with critical thinking and decision frameworks to smooth and accelerate delivery, adding value through with effective people and teams. How can he be a valuable member of your team delivering an uplift in capability that will remain after he is gone?
Master Class is1-2 day workshop that is about shifting from ‘having a strategy’ to ‘being strategic’. The focus of this work is to critically analyse the modern operating context of organisations, to understand the role of prediction and adaptation when it comes to strategy. Using systems thinking and complex design to establish strategic decision making tools that reflect your organisational maturity and the kind of work needed for being strategic in uncertain times.
Strategy and Change
All of Joe’s work comes from a philosophy that strategy and change are one in the same, grounded in the belief that strategy needs to reflect the operating context of a organisation.
When your strategy is successful over the course of a few years, your organisation will have changed it’s operating context and as a result the strategy will probably need some change. If however, the strategy does not result in a change of operating context, the strategy has not been as successful as planned, and will probably need some change.
This idea is why Joe advocates for the development of adaptive strategy and the shift from having strategy to being strategic. Building the capability to navigate change so you don’t waste your time and best thinkers on work that doesn’t make a difference.
About Joe
Over the last 20 years, Joe Hopkirk has worked with some of New Zealand's most complex organisations — the Department of Conservation, Greater Wellington Regional Council, Environment Canterbury, and the All-of-Government Covid-19 response among them. Across partner-led conservation programmes, large-scale regulatory transformations, and intergenerational strategy frameworks, he's consistently been the person organisations turn to when the stakes are high and the path forward isn't clear.
It started with a Philosophy degree — learning to question assumptions, sit with uncertainty, and understand what drives people. An MBA, training in Liberating Structures and Cynefin Sensemaker added rigour and complexity to that foundation. The result is an approach clients and colleagues notice: Joe asks the right questions at the right moment, helping people think more clearly about problems they've been stuck on. He thinks differently — and that has impact.
He works with leaders and organisations to design adaptive strategies, build real organisational capability, and develop the people to deliver it — through consulting, coaching, mentoring, and masterclasses grounded in his organisational maturity approach. Underneath all of it is a genuine belief that being human — understanding people’s values, building trust, meeting people and organisations where they are — is what makes systems work and change last. People like working with him. That's not incidental. It's the point.
